Tax code and healthcare
In order to identify Italian and foreign citizens residing in the region when they interact with local administration or public offices, they must apply for a tax code, a 16-figure alphanumeric code issued for free by the Italian Revenue Agency.
Applications can be made at any regional office of the Italian Revenue Agency. You must have a Tax Code in order to:
- Enrol at an Italian University;
- Open a bank account;
- Sign any type of contract (rental, phone line, etc.)
- Register with the Italian National Health Service (SSN)”
Tax Code
A tax code is compulsory for all NON-EU citizens, even for short stays, while it is only needed for EU citizens if they plan to stay a long time.
Registering at the Registry Office
EU members have the right to stay in Italy for a period not exceeding three months without being subject to any conditions or formalities, other than the requirement to hold a valid identity document for foreign travel.
However, if they intend to stay in Italy for a period exceeding three months, they must register with the Resident Population Registry (ANPR) within three months from entering the country.
To register, you must go to the office of the municipality where you have established your habitual residence.
